# Materials Collection for All Multi-Year Renewable Appointments

This information, specific to each position, is included in the steps for each Multi-Year Renewable appointment process. This page is designed to highlight the similarities and distinctions between the requirements for each role.

## Advertising

For **all** multi-year renewable appointments requiring searches, the advertisement should ask **all** candidates to submit with their original application materials:

- A **teaching/advising statement** describing the candidate’s philosophy and practices as well as their approach to creating a learning environment in which students are encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas;
- A **service statement** that describes efforts to strengthen academic communities (e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies)

Additionally, the advertisement should ask **some** candidates to submit the following with their original application materials.

Senior Lecturer Senior Preceptor Professor in Residence Part-Time Professor of the Practice

## Senior Lecturer

- Cover letter
- *Curriculum vitae*
- Research statement, pedagogical innovation statement, or artistic statement
- Up to three recommendation letters

## Senior Preceptor

- Cover letter
- *Curriculum vitae*
- At least three references who can be contacted for letters of recommendation should the candidate become a finalist

## Professor in Residence

- A research statement

## Part-Time Professor of the Practice

- A research statement or statement of professional activities

Other materials will be required for the finalist’s dossier. While these materials are not needed in this step, they must be collected well before the end of the appointment process, ideally once the external letter request has been approved by the divisional dean (and, in the case of Senior Preceptors, no later than after the candidate's campus visit). This gives the candidate plenty of time to prepare.

## Requesting Dossier Materials

Once a finalist has been selected, start working with the candidate to collect the following materials. (Use the relevant dossier checklist to ensure you have collected all materials.)

- **Teaching and advising materials:** Candidates for all positions should send a teaching chart listing courses in reverse chronological order, any teaching awards, representative course syllabi, and teaching evaluations. *(Note: In the teaching chart, please indicate which, if any, courses were taught remotely, whether partially or in full, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)* Position-specific addenda to these materials are:
    - **Professors in Residence**: Include, ideally, ten years of courses in reverse chronological order, and a list of undergraduate and graduate theses supervised (and postdoctoral advisees, as relevant).
    - **Senior Lecturer:** A list of past and present undergraduate students for whom the candidate has primary advising responsibility, and evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as teaching awards and teaching evaluations
- **Letters**
    - **Senior Preceptor:** Three letters of recommendation
    - **Senior Lecturer**: At least eight evaluative letters (including recommendation letters). In addition to any recommendation letters submitted with the original application materials, the department should solicit at least 5-8 more letters from outside scholars either at the short-list stage or once a finalist is selected.

**Senior Lecturers and Part-Time Professors of the Practice:** In art-making fields, a portfolio of creative work and significant reviews of the candidate's work.

The divisional/SEAS dean may, as needed, request additional information from or about candidates at relevant points in the search process.
